WASHINGTON, D.C. — Howard University moved into a first-place tie in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) Northern Division standings after defeating Coppin State 60-51 inside Burr Gymnasium on Sunday afternoon.
With the victory, Howard improved to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in league play.
Defensively, the Bison held the Eagles to 29-percent (16-of-55) shooting, including 26-percent (5-of-19) behind the arc, while forcing 21 turnovers.
Nine Bison scored despite a tough shooting day from the field (30-percent) and foul line (55-percent). Newcomer Anzhane’ Hutton had a bounceback performance, producing a game-high 19 points on 8-of-12 shooting in the win.
Morgan State 72, Delaware State 65
DOVER, Del. — Dahnye Redd dropped 20 points to lead three Morgan State players in double figures on Sunday, as Morgan State completed a weekend sweep of Delaware State with a 72-65 win in Memorial Hall.
Morgan State improved to 6-2 overall, 3-1 in MEAC play on the season.
Redd went 6-for-14 from the floor and hit eight of her nine free throws, while also tying for the team high with seven rebounds. Ja’Niah Henson and Ashia McCalla each added 10 points for the Lady Bears.
Lyric Turner led Delaware State with 18 points.
North Carolina A&T State 49, Norfolk State 32
GREENSBORO, N.C. — North Carolina A&T State women’s basketball put together a stellar performance for 40 minutes defensively and never allowed Norfolk State a lead in a 49-32 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) win Sunday afternoon at Corbett Sports Center.
Out of the 80 minutes played against the Spartans in two games over the weekend, the Aggies trialed 3 ½ minutes. The Aggies (6-1, 4-0 MEAC) are winners of six “straight and will have two weeks off before their next contest at N.C. Central.
Junior guard Jasmen Walton led the Aggies with 14 points on 5-for-7 shooting. Freshman guard Sean Kelly Darks added 10 points, five rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Graduate guard Chanin Scott led the team on the glass with 12 rebounds. Freshman guard D’Mya Tucker and sophomore forward Shayla Nelson had 11 rebounds apiece.
